Getting Help from the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) (Spanish available)

Learn how California’s Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) helps teens and adults with disabilities prepare for college, training, and employment—with real examples of how to access services.

This episode of EFRC’s Parenting Hacks offers an overview of how the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) helps people with disabilities prepare for work, college, and independent living. It explains two main service pathways—student services for youth ages 16–22 and adult vocational training and employment supports for ages 22 and older.

Presenters Elena Kaltsas (EFRC) and Miriam Abdul Sattar (DOR) walk families through the process step by step: how to apply and determine eligibility, what kinds of supports are available, and how to coordinate between DOR and Regional Center programs. They also describe how DOR and Regional Centers work together on paid internships, job coaching, and assistive technology to help individuals gain real-world experience.

Parents will learn when to begin planning, how to request services, and how these partnerships create stronger pathways to education, employment, and independence.
